Certified Management Consultant

The Certified Management Consultant™ (CMC®) mark is an international professional certification for management consultants who have achieved a level of performance that includes professional standards in technical competency and ethics, and global standards in consulting competencies, professional behaviour, client and project management, and personal conduct.

IMCS, as a Full Member of the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes (ICMCI), is the only Singapore body accredited by the ICMCI to award CMC status.

In addition to the benefits of being a member of the Institute, you will receive the CMC designation which identify you as a management consultant whose competency is certified and recognised worldwide.  Carrying the CMC mark set you apart in the marketplace, and with your clients, as a professional consultant.

CMC is a competency-based qualification which requires you to demonstrate sufficient, relevant and timely evidence of your competency as a management consultant.

When applying for CMC certification, you are assessed against the CMC Standard developed and endorsed by the ICMCI.  The Standard against which you will be assessed comprises the following elements:

Check if you meet the pre-requisites as criteria for application. You need to:

  • Be not below the age of 21 years
  • Be not an undischarged bankrupt and has never been convicted in any Court of Law or detained under the provision of any written law
  • Have a degree or equivalent professional qualification, or experience in lieu with at least 10 years in management function or at least 6 years in management consultancy
  • Be actively engaged in management consultancy for at least 1,200 hours per annum for 3 consecutive years

Complete a detailed application form for Certified Membership setting out your experience as a management consultant including your personal details, qualifications and training, employment history, and areas of consulting specialisation, knowledge and expertise.  Include the following details and supporting documents:

  • Statement by Proposer and Seconder (who must be Certified Members or Fellows who must have known the applicant for at least two years)
  • Copies of education and professional qualification certificates
  • Up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV) or resume
  • Certificate of completion of IMCS Management Consulting Course or any other course approved by IMCS
  • Written description of at least 3 management consultancy assignments from 3 different client organisations

Submit the application with the supporting documents by email to secretariat@imcsingapore.com and mail hard copies to:

A complete submission will usually take 4 to 6 weeks from the time you submit your application. We may contact you via email for clarifications.

Assessment

Your application will first be reviewed for completeness by the Institute secretariat.

If the documents submitted for application are incomplete, the Institute will request for appropriate information and/or document(s) from you.

If the application documents are in order, your application will be accepted into the certification process where your academic and professional qualifications will be verified against documentary evidence supplied.  This may include obtaining references from your clients stated in the application form.  Client referrals may be obtained through oral testimony by telephone or confidential meeting.

You will then be scheduled for an assessment interview conducted by the CMC Certification Board comprising of its Chair, an external qualified professional and a certified member of the institute. During the face-to-face meeting, you will be invited to present your three client assignments stated in your application form.  This will be followed by an interview based on the Certified Management Consultant Competence Framework in which Panel members will discuss with you on your experience, skills and knowledge and assess these against the Competence Framework Reference Statements.

Upon completion of the assessment, the Chair of the CMC Certification Board will submit its recommendation to the IMCS Council for approval.

Award

After the interview you will either:

  • receive a letter confirming that you are now a CMC; or
  • receive a report setting out areas where require further evidence is required.

Re-Submission

  • If you are assessed as not satisfying all the requirements for certification, you will be provided feedback on the improvements required and you will be invited to re-apply once these have been addressed.

For successful application, you will be issued an invoice for the application fee ($100), assessment fee ($300) and annual subscription ($270).

Within a few weeks of being accepted you will receive a CMC Certificate. You will be required to formally undertake to abide by IMCS Code of Professional Conduct. All CMCs follow the guidelines for use of the CMC certificate mark.

Certificate Renewal

If your certified membership has expired, you are required to renew your membership in order to retain your CMC certification.
CMC certification renewal is due 1 October of every third year for members who joined before 2017, and every third year from the membership entry date for newer members.

  • The secretariat will notify you on the renewal one month before the expiry.

You are required to provide the following during the re-certification:

  • Completed and signed CMC Continuous Professional Development Form (CPD)
    1. CMCs should pursue a life-long learning process. They demonstrate their efforts to refresh or improve their skills set, making them a better consultant and increase their “value added” benefit the consultant brings to an engagement.
    2. To fulfil the CPD requirement, a CMC needs to maintain at least 90 CPD hours per triennium, of which at least 65 hours must be structured learning, with a minimum of 14 structured learning hours annually; and 25 hours of unstructured learning.
    3. If you are an RMC, you can submit the same CPD hours submitted for RMC
  • Summary of management consulting experience
    1. CMCs should work in their profession. They should be consulting, either for profit or in a pro-bono setting. CMCs need to exercise their skills, work with clients and associates, and ensure they are improving their ability to communicate with and serve clients in a variety of settings.  What’s important is the time they spend working as a management consultant and developing their practice.
    2. As part of the fulfilment for re-certification, a CMC is required to provide records of his or her management consulting experience in the last 3 years.
  • Payment of $50 for assessment fee (waived for now)

For successful application, you will be issued an invoice of the membership renewal fee ($270 annually).

If renewal is unsuccessful due to insufficient CPE hours, you will be given up to 1 year to satisfy the CPE requirement and your membership status will be suspended. If the CPE requirement is not met within the stipulated time, your membership will be revoked.

If you wish to appeal against a decision made by the assessors, you should write to the Chairman, CMC Certification Board outlining your grounds of appeal. All appeals have to be submitted in writing to the Board within two weeks of the notification of results. An administrative fee is payable for the processing of appeals.
